Chapter 11
“Prisoner 87433, move to the yellow line!”
Danny Trent stepped forward, through his cell door, and onto the yellow line. He was being transferred today from county jail to state prison. He was surprised it was happening at all due to the state prison overcrowding. His attorney had assured him that if he behaved well that he had a good chance of getting to stay in county, which was much nicer than the state accommodations. Danny had made himself into the model prisoner, but his fucking attorney turned out to also be a fucking liar. He was being transferred today, and there was nothing he could do about it. It was the second worst thing about being locked up—not having any control over his life. He was told when to get up, when to eat, when to piss, and when to sleep. Now he was being told he was going to Logan, and he had heard bad things about that place. He wasn’t too popular in county as it was since they said he had terrorized a woman, but in state, he was told he would only be a rung above the child molesters. Somehow, he had to stop this from happening. Then he had to fix the worst thing about being locked up. He was away from Cassandra. God, he missed her. Her golden hair and blue eyes. He loved her so much, and it was killing him each and every day to be away from her.
“87433, step three steps to your right!”
Danny stepped three steps to his right and met one of the guards at that spot. The guard looked at him dispassionately and snapped handcuffs on his right wrist, drew his arm behind his back and then snapped his left wrist in a cuff. Bastard cop. He had snapped them tight, too. Danny could feel the metal pressing into his flesh as he pulled against them. It was instinct. He couldn’t seem to stop himself.
“87433, we are here to transfer you to Logan Correctional Center where you will serve the balance of your sentence which is four and a half years. Officer O’Halloran here will collect your belongings and you will be escorted to the van waiting downstairs.”
Danny watched as the officer took a small garbage bag and began to collect his books, letters, and a few clothes.
O’Halloran didn’t look at the guard as he gathered up Danny’s belongings, so Danny was surprised when he spoke.
“You need to get the prisoner in manacles for travel. Handcuffs are not sufficient for transfer.”
“We do that in the holding area, O’Halloran. It upsets the other prisoners to see manacles, so we don’t do that in general population.”
O’Halloran rolled his eyes at the guard. “Well, we wouldn’t want to upset them now, would we?”
Some of the letters and books slipped from O’Halloran’s hand and landed on the floor with a plop. Papers fluttered to the floor and Danny looked in horror as the picture of Cassandra floated out from one of the books and fell on O’Halloran’s shoe.
